The Cultivation of jute in Bengal and Bihar has been revived after a gap of several years, which was once a lucrative cash crop for farmers.
Incidentally, over a period of time, banana farming had turned out to be hugely popular cash crop cultivation, but a disease ‘Panama wilt’ which hit banana cultivation, forced farmers again to switch over jute cultivation.
Reeta Sing, Senior scientist and head of krishi vigyan Kendra (katihar), said,
“Farming of jute in the district has been revived after a gap of several years because use of plastic bags has been banned and customers avoiding to use plastic and nylon products,
Plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental issues as rapidly increasing production of plastic products overwhelms the world’s ability to deal with them.
But initiatives from government and customers supports, farmers from villages are reviving and increasing more farming of jute.
As we are in the generation who are more affecting disease due to use of more plastic, so now the time is coming and we should decide to no more buy of plastic and nylon bags.
During the visit in village of katihar (Bihar) for sourcing jute for meesu crafts pipa jute hand bag, Our Team Had a long discussion with jute farmers, Shankar Ravidas ( father of two kids and living under mud house with wife and aged father, said we use traditional verities for cultivation of jute.
Before removal of fibre from jute plants, it is treated with water, besides microbial action is required. But, we put them in dirty or muddy water, which affects the quality of the fibre. Keeping them (Harvested jute crops) in fresh water, besides using high quality varieties enhances the fibre quality. The Processed fibre looks golden in colour. The poor quality looks blackish when processed.
JRO 8432, JRO128, S19, JR0204, CO 58 are some of the high quality verities for upping the output.
